Your first outing with a newborn: a calm, simple checklist

31 October 2026 · 5 min read

The first time you leave the house with a newborn can feel like planning an expedition. It doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to be short, simple and kind to you both.

Most mums remember their first proper outing with their baby. Usually it's a mix of pride, nerves and realising halfway down the road that the muslin is still on the kitchen table. That's completely normal. Here's how to make it feel a little easier.

Start small

Your first outing doesn't have to be a full day out. A twenty-minute walk around the block, a quick coffee or a short visit to a friend all count. Pick somewhere close to home, so heading back early is easy if either of you has had enough.

Time it around feeds and naps

Many mums find it easiest to head out just after a feed, when baby is settled and likely to nap in the pram or sling. Don't worry if it doesn't go to plan. Babies rarely read the schedule.

The changing bag checklist

  • Nappies (one more than you think you'll need) and wipes
  • A changing mat and a few nappy bags
  • A spare outfit for baby, and a spare top for you
  • Muslins, always more than one
  • Whatever you need for feeding
  • A blanket or extra layer, and a hat for the weather
  • Water and a snack for you
  • Phone, keys, card, and nothing more than you need

Pack the bag the night before and leave it by the door. It's one less thing to think about in the morning.

Choose a baby-friendly spot

Look for somewhere with space for a pram, step-free access and baby changing. Cafés that welcome babies are usually happy to tell you if you ring ahead. It's also why every Mama Time gathering will be planned with prams, changing and feeding in mind.

Leaving early isn't failing. Going out at all is the win.

Give yourself permission

If baby cries, needs a feed or a change, or you simply want to go home, that's absolutely fine. Everyone around you has either been there or will be. The more often you go out, the more natural it feels.

Go with company

Going out with other mums can make it so much easier. There's always someone to hold your coffee, or to tell you their baby did exactly the same thing last week. That's the whole idea behind our buggy walks and coffee mornings.
